The organ was originally built by H. C. Sims of Southampton, and has been through various restorations and updates, the latest being by Michael Farley in 1983.

The instrument is highly regarded by local and visiting organists, and is seen by many as one of the finest instruments in Devon.

The console is located in the chancel, just east of the rood screen. The organist's red-rimmed mirror can be seen above the console.

Most of the pipes speak into the chancel, except the Positive, which speaks into the north aisle.

The "Bomb" feature among the Swell thumb pistons is not a self-destruct device, but a toggle piston to switch the Pedal Bombarde on or off.

There is also a toe piston which performs the same function.

The National Pipe Organ Register reference number is D04867. The full specification is listed here (opens in new window).
